Have you ever really looked at the ingredients on your foundation bottle? How about your shampoo? Or face cream?
I never looked at the ingredients in all of my beauty supplies as a teenager. However, as I got into my twenties, I became more aware and educated about the chemicals that were hiding in about 90% of my products. As I continued to do research on the effects of these chemicals on our bodies, it blew my mind! Cancer, Acne, Mood Swings, and Cysts to name a few...I became determined to cut these things out of my life for the most part and only use products that contain natural ingredients that won't cause me to have possible intestinal damage, headaches, and memory loss. Afterall these are things that i use EVERYDAY. I don't want to put my body at risk on a daily basis for the price of "beauty".
So, over the years I've been testing out different natural and organic products and I have finally found chemical free products that I really like and that actually work! Our skin is our largest organ and the things that we put onto our skin gets absorbed into our bodies. That is why it is important for me to use makeup, creams and cleansers that are chemical free.
Public Health Laws ALLOW:
First I will give you a list of chemicals and their effects on the body to beware of. Then I will show you some of my favorite products that I currently use!
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate- found in many personal care products and mainly in shampoos. This
chemical is known to damage hair follicles and it actually causes the hair
to fall out due to a toxic overload. This chemical has been linked to eye damage, intestinal damage, breathing problems, skin spots and cysts. It has even caused a mouse's skin to sag and become wrinkled. Chronic exposure can cause low energy, irritability, mood changes,
chronic headaches and memory loss. The Journal of Pharmacological Science says that this chemical, can stay in the body as long as 7 days after the exposure
Propylene Glycol, PG, PEG- found in shampoos, lotions, and creams... and it is also found in anti-freeze...this chemical can damage or alter cell membranes.
Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid, Malic Acid- These chemicals sometimes cause blistering, bleeding, severe redness and skin discoloration. And some of them can cause you to have an increased sensitivity to the sun
Ethylene Oxide- found in a lot of baby shampoos. Known to cause cancer.
Mineral Oil- Skin cancer, Stomach Cancer, Pancreas Cancer...most baby oils are 100% Mineral Oil. Also can be found in makeup remover.
Cocoamide DEA or MEA- found in shampoos, body and face creams... repeated skin applications could result in a definite increase in liver and kidney cancer.
Paraben, MethylParaben, ButylParaben, PropylParaben- shampoos, cosmetics, tanning creams, face creams, lotions... They can change your hormones, effect your endocrine system, and cause BREAST CANCER. Parabens have been found in the breast tissue of women with breast cancer.
Diazolidinyl Urea, Imidazolidinyl Urea and Quaternium Compounds AKA FORMALDEHYDE- found in: nail polish, soap, deodorant, shaving cream, eyelash adhesive and shampoo. Can cause respiratory tract and eye irritation, cancer, immune system damage, genetic damage, and trigger asthma.
Fragrance- found in well almost everything... can cause developmental defects and endocrine disruption.
Talc- found in Mineral Makeup, eye shadow, blush, baby powder, deodorant and soap. It is known to act as a human carcinogen and has been directly linked to ovarian cancer. It can also, when inhaled, lead to the formation of lung tumors.
So, now that we have that covered, I will say that it is very hard to COMPLETELY remove ALL of these chemicals from your life. But, if you start by making small changes here and there, it will still be very beneficial to your health and wellbeing. (by the way this is JUST my opinion... I'm no doctor)
Here are the products and brands that I use and love. They are mostly chemical free and I have noticed a great improvement in my skin since I have cut the chemicals out and reverted to these alternatives!
